BACKGROUND – HURRICANE IRENE
Hurricane Irene 2011 is a major tropical cyclone impacting the mid-Atlantic and northeastern United States, projected to make landfall in the New York City area on Sunday. Forecast models have shown at least 65 million people in its projected path. In preparation for the storm, thousands are being evacuated in North Carolina, New Jersey and elsewhere, and New York City plans to shut down all mass transit beginning Saturday at noon.
